Scholar,'Kamtaratna', Ambika Charan Choudhuri dies in road mishap

Bongaigaon,  December 4: A legendary person of Assamese literature. Eminent writer , historian , and social worker Ambika Charan Choudhury who had been conferred the title of “Kamataratna” died  in a tragic road mishap at Kamakhyaguri area of West Bengal at around 10.30 am. He was travelling by his own Maruti Alto car (AS-19-D- 8402) when a bus coming from the opposite side collided with the car and he along with his driver died on the spot .
Born on  August 16, 1930 in Borpara village of Bongaigaon, Ambika Charan Choudhury completed his graduation from Cotton College.  After that he joined in government service at Shillong. During his career he changed several jobs and at last retired as Principal of Bongaigaon Normal School . He was the founder of that school also. In his life he remained attached with many social organizations. He successfully performed his duty as joint secretary of OBC Xahitya Xabha , secretary of Goalpara District Xahitya Xabha , secretary of Koch- Rajbanshi  Sanmilany (for 12 years) , executive member of Assam Xahitya Xabha (for 3 years.). He was the first man who proposed in Dhubri convention of Axom Xahitya Xabha to consider Assamese language as state language in government purposes and which was accepted later. The statue of “Bir Chilaray” had been constructed at Amingaon just for his initiatives. Along with that he was also founder of several educational institutions and and organizations also.
In his life circle, he had written more than 123 valuable articles and 29 books. Ratnapeethot Ebhumiki was his first book written in 1961. Koch-Rajbanshi Jatir Itihakh aru Sanskriti, Kamatapurot Mohapurush Sreemanta Sankardev, The Koches around the world , Koch- Rajbanshi betrayed are few books written by him.
Several organization such as AASU , AKRSU , AMSU , AJYCP expressed their mourning  in his unexpected death. Swadhin Ray alias Azad Baruah , captain of pro-talk ULFA group of Bongaigaon also expressed his painful sorrow. Koch-Rajbanshi United Federation had postponed their 12 hours “Assam Bandh” on December 5 for this reason. His dead body will be brought to Bongaigaon later in the day .







Ambika Charan Choudhury (1930–2011) was a noted Assamese litterateur, historian and activist from Bongaigaon in Assam.Popularly he is known as Kamataratna.

Early life and education

Social life
Choudhury always get attached with many social and political organizations. He devoted most of his life for the development and promotion of Rajbanshi language and culture. He was an executive member of Assam Xahitya Xabha, joint secretary of OBC Xahitya Xabha, secretary of Goalpara District Xahitya Xabha, and secretary of Koch-Rajbanshi Sanmilany. He was also founder of many educational institutions in western Assam. Choudhury was leading the popular demand for ST status to the Koch-Rajbangshi community since 1958. He was actively involved with the Sanmilita Jatiya Abhibartan, which is facilitating the peace process between Government of India and the rebel group ULFA.
He died on December 4, 2011 in a road mishap at Tetultola near Kamakhyaguri in West Bengal.He left behind his wife, three daughters and two sons.


Literary works
Ambika Choudhury started his major literary journey through Ratnapeethot Ebhumiki, a book written in 1961. He had written more than 123 valuable articles and 29 books mostly on the Rajbangshi language and culture. Koch-Rajbanshi Jatir Itihakh aru Sanskriti, Kamatapurot Mohapurush Sreemanta Sankardev, The Koches Around the World, Koch-Rajbanshi betrayed, Biswabir Chila Roy Sahitya Pratibha, Rani Abhayeswari and Bijni Rajyar Itibritta are some of his notable books written in Assamese.

Awards and honours
Choudhury, a recipient of Chilarai award, instituted by the Government of Assam. He was considered the backbone of Koch-Rajbanshi language movement and conferred the tittle of Kamataratna.
