Why Rajbanshis have a great respect for the Brahmins?

There is an interesting sad story behind this question according to the book "Koch Rajbanshi and Kamtapuri ( The Truth Unveiled) " written by Nalini Ranjan  Ray in Page no.62. It gives us the information about the time of King Bishwa Singh-The first Rajbanshi King(1496-1553). For the Sake of amusement, once the king Biswa singha Committed a blunder that cost a precious life of a Brahnin and soon king died repenting for it. One day the king was busy dealing with state affairs in this royal court surrounded by dis ministers and courtiers. On that day a Brahmin name d Bhabananda came to meet the king for financial help to marry off his daughter. The Brahmin was stopped at the gate and royal guard went inside  to seek king's permission. After obtaining permission the Brahmin was allowed to enter the palace and requested the king for financial help to marry off his daughter. The king listened to the Brahmin's request and soon ordered his minister to sanction financial aid. The king took the opportunity to ask one question to the Brahmin as to why people used to touch toes of the elders while paying their respects in the bowing down gesture of "Pronam". The pious Brahmin replied that cosmic energy flows down from human body through the toes. So  while touching the toes of the elders the younger gain that energy, which is as clear as white colour.   The answer created amusement sort of feeling in the king. The king ordered his soldiers to cut the toes  of the Brahmin and see what happened to the flowing cosmic energy. The soldiers obeyed king's orders, soon the Brahmin was bleeding profusely. In great pains he told the king that a cow gives us milk, Which is white but that did not mean that if the nipple of the cow were cut white milk would flow, rather red blood would flow and cow would die of bleeding that would be heinous crime. If the Brahmin were happened to die of bleeding through his cut toes in that case the king too would die of a killer disease. The king realized his mistake, soon arranged medical treatment for the Brahmin but despite taking great care within few days the Brahmin died. This incident deeply hurt the feelings of the king. Luck could have it, the king was attacked by chicken pox within few months from the day of the incident and was not responding to treatment .The king sensed his end, called his prince sons by his deathbed and advised them to always respect the Brahmins and never cause any harm to them. Then the king died. From that day onwards it became a custom for Rajbanshis to show great respect to the Bramins, which continued forever.

Bir Chilarai – The World Class Great Hero(1510-1571 A.D.)
Shukladhwaj, popularly known as Chila Ray was a great general who belonged to the Koch Royal Dynasty. He played a significant role in expanding the empire of his elder brother, Maharaja Nara Narayan the greatest Koch king of the Kamata kingdom who reigned in the 16th century.
Maharaja Viswa Singha was the founder of the Koch Royal Dynasty, who newly established his kingdom in 1515 AD. He had 18 sons namely Narasingha, Naranarayana(Malladwaj), Sukladwaj(Chila Ray), Gahikamal,Maydan, Ramvhandra, Sursingha, Harisingha, Mecha, Brishketu, Ramnarayana, Ananta,Dipsingha, Hemdhar, Meghnarayana, Jagat, Rupchand, and Surya; but among them Naranarayana and Chila Ray were the outstanding.
Sukladwaj(Chila Ray), was born in 1510 and his mother was the Gour princesses Padmabati alias Soumadini. There was an anecdote that when Shukladhwaj was born there was a mild earthquake in the entire region. From the early childhood he was extraordinary in intellect and physical strength. He along with his brothers learnt warfare and they all mastered the art very well. For achieving higher education, he and his elder brother Malladwaj were sent to Varanasi. They learnt various subjects and acquired knowledge in Sanskrit, Grammar, Literature, Law, Astrology etc.
After the death of Maharaja Viswa Singha, his son Malla Dev or Malladwaj ascended the throne of Kamata Kingdom. Then he was better known as Maharaja Nara Narayan. Shukladhwaj was appointed Army Commander in Chief and he assisted his brother in extending the kingdom. A brave warrior and an exceptional general, Shukladhwaj was extremely quick in his actions. He came to be known as ‘Chila Ray’ as he was swift like the bird chila or the kite in capturing the foes.
Nara Narayan defeated the king of Cachar and brought his kingdom under his rule. The king of Manipur surrendered as he decided not to combat with such a powerful ruler. Chila Ray then attacked the states of Jayantia, Tippera(Tripura) and Sylhet. He defeated the kings in the battles and killed them. Observing the condition of the neighbouring states, the rulers of Khairam and Dimoriya submitted their petty states. Thus, with the help of Chila Ray’s heroism, Maharaja Nara Narayan extended his vast empire and earned revenues from several rulers.
Nara Narayan attacked Gour for the second time when Akbar, the Mughal emperor sought help from him. They had an alliance with Sisya Singha Raikat and Debraj, the king of Bhutan while invading Gour. Chila Ray captured Ghoraghat and seized the whole area of Gour. After defeating King Gourpasha, the kingdom was shared between Nara Narayan and Akbar.
In June 1563 the Koches under the command of Chila Ray managed to occupy the capital of Ahom, Gargaon. In 1568 AD, another battle ensued when Nara Narayan attacked Gour, ruled by Soleman Karnani. But this time he had to face defeat as Kalapahar, the army commander captured Chila Ray. Kalapahar with his soldiers then destroyed many temples including Kamakhya while he proceeded towards Tezpur. However Chilarai and Naranarayan later rebuilt the Kamakhya temple in in 1565 that the Sultan's army had destroyed
Chilarai's valour ensured Koch supremacy over the Bhutia, Kachari kingdom (of Hadimba, now dimapur) and the Ahoms. It was the courageous deeds of Chila Ray that led the Koch kingdom reach the zenith.
Later, Nara Narayan divided his kingdom into two parts namely, Koch Bihar and Koch Hajo. He kept Koch Bihar, the western part under his authority while Koch Hajo, the eastern part was given to Raghudev, the son of Chila Ray.
Chila Ray was instrumental in giving Srimanta Sankardeva protection and shelter and married his niece Kamalapriya. Naranayana and Chila Ray also patronized the great Vaishnavite movement of Sankardeva.
After the second invasion of Gour, Chila Ray breathed his last in 1571 on the banks of River Ganga as he suffered from pox. Chila Ray was perhaps the greatest general that Indian history ignored.
In the Journal of Indian Air Force Anniversary issue, 2000 it was mentioned – “Arnold Toynbee, one of the greatest historians of international repute, while ranking three all time war- heroes in the late seventies of the 20th century, named two of the great Indian world heroes. They are General Sukkladhwaj popularly known as Chila Ray and Chatrapati Shivaji, the other great personality being General Nepoleon Bonaparte of France. As per the assesmeent, these three world class warriors, besides being the experts in the warfare, propounded war techniques and principles. Moreover they have fought for the cause of common people. Out of the three great heroes, not only that the two of them are from India but they stand to be the pioneers as per the chronological analysis. It means that the war techniques which Chila Ray introduced in the 16th century were the unique ones and have enriched the war techniques of Shivaji in the 17th century and that of Napoleon in the 18th century.”
We humbly pay our tribute to the departed soul of this World Class Great Hero, the immortal glory of the Koch-Rajbongshis on the 503rd Birth Anniversary.
